Our school has a well deserved reputation for sports, competitions and teamwork.

At Durham School, we are passionate about sport. We view sport as a vital ingredient in contributing to the development of confident, healthy, all round individuals and we pride ourselves on offering a broad range of sports and activities. Our sports provision embraces ‘Excellence’ and ‘Sport for All’ and we encourage all our pupils to participate at the level which suits him or her.

Durham School has long sporting traditions with our Rugby Club being the 5th oldest and our Boat Club being the 3rd oldest in the World. We have built upon these traditions, and now have girls and boys competing in the international and national sporting arena in a range of sports.

Our sports teams regularly compete at a regional and national level with our Rugby First XV reaching the final stages of the National Cup regularly and the Rosslyn Park Sevens, as well as competing on one of the toughest circuits in the country.

Rowing has been incredibly successful at regional, national and international levels over the years with crews regularly attending Schools' Head of the River, National Schools Regatta, Henley Womens Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. The Cricket Club is famed for the picturesque Playground playing surface and has featured in ‘The Cricketer top 100 Senior Schools’ 4 years running. Our Girls’ teams play on a very competitive circuit with many teams seeing success at County level in Hockey and Netball.

All our pupils participate in a minimum of 4 ½ hours of sport and physical activity per week with pupils representing Durham School in teams, also competing in a busy and challenging fixture list and accessing extra coaching and support for their sport within activities sessions before school, during lunchtime and after school.

As well as our main sports of Rugby, Rowing, Cricket, Hockey and Netball, pupils have the opportunity to take part in Swimming, Basketball, Badminton, Tennis, Athletics and Cross Country or follow a healthy and active lifestyle by using our gym facilities and extra classes in Aerobics and Dance to name just a few.

Durham School is one of the 8 national Modern Pentathlon academies. Pupils of all ages take part in a variety of competitions from laser run and biathlon competitions run through pentathlon to tetrathlon and pistol shooting competitions. Weekly training for swimming, laser run and shooting are well attended with many pupils returning to join our holiday residential courses.

Inter House sporting competition thrives with every pupil having the opportunity to have their moment of ‘glory’ and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing our pupils enjoying sport, working together as a team and taking pride in their performance for their House.

Our passion for Sport expands outside of school and we find nothing more rewarding than seeing our Old Boys and Girls participate in sport after they leave, whether that is locally or professionally.

Whatever their ability, we want pupils to enjoy their sport and our knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic coaching team work tirelessly to ensure pupils receive excellent coaching and fulfil their potential. Our regular communication with National Governing Bodies, Local Academies and Universities allow us a clear vision of the right pathway for our pupils to take.

Our excellent facilities are also used by a number of local clubs and Durham University.  Please see our pages on hiring our facilities and holiday courses for further information:
