Durham Pupils head Down Under for University

Two of our year 13 pupils have recently been accepted into The Australian National University and The University of Auckland to study towards their Bachelor degrees after Sixth Form.

Martin Chao has received a conditional offer to study for a Bachelor of Economics degree from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. Piers Oxenham has also received a conditional offer to study for a Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Education degree from Auckland University, New Zealand.

Martin said “Economics involves social sciences, mathematics and philosophy. I enjoy learning the mechanism of markets and willing to develop a further study in the areas mentioned. I believe that the wide range of skill set that I am going to obtain in Bachelor’s degree able to support my Postgraduate degree and career life.”

Martin said, “Ms Thompson was really supportive during my application process. She, combining with other Economics teachers such as Mr. Graham and Mr. Gouge had given me valuable information needed and keen advices. I would like to show my appreciation to them.”

Talking about his recent acceptance, Piers said, “I wanted to apply to Auckland University so that I could experience another culture. I wanted to go to Auckland University because my family lived in Auckland and said it’s a great university and especially due to covid I want to take that chance and experience it. I really like sport so the opportunity to do a sport based degree in a country that is big on sport excites me”

Piers said, “I really hope to meet new people and experience the New Zealand culture. Ultimately, I want to get a good degree which I can then use to pursue a career in sport. Mrs Thompson is class though she’s helped a lot and is a great Head of Sixth Form because she get what pupils think instead of trying to be too formal and regimental."
