Four pupils from Durham School have calculated a formula for success when it comes to maths – beating 1,300 schools to come out top of the class in a prestigious national competition.
On February 5, the Year 11, 12 and 13 pupils who attend the independent co-educational day and boarding school in the North East, travelled to London to take part in the UKMT Team Mathematics Competition, National Finals, at Westminster School.
Having won the northern regional final in November, without dropping a single mark, the finals saw Jeff Zhang (18) , Cindy Shang (17),Linda Lin (16), and Maggie Qian (16), compete in five tough mathematical rounds against pupils from 86 other schools from around the UK.
After the first three rounds, Durham School were in the top 10 schools and went onto compete in the final ‘team relay’ which would decide the eventual winners. Durham School and Westminster school ended on equal points and were each awarded the national trophy for joint first place.
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics.
The UKMT organises the Team Challenge competition to promote mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills and gives the opportunity for pupils to compete against other schools in the UK. This is the most prestigious maths competition of its kind, with over 1,300 schools taking part from all over the UK.
Head of Mathematics at Durham, Tim Middleton said, “I am exceptionally proud of my amazing team. They really rose to the challenge on the day and were almost unstoppable in their desire to do well. This is a real celebration of not only their ability, but of all their hard work leading up to this competition. Well done!.”
All four pupils have ambitions to further their studies in mathematics and economics.
Jeff hopes to attend University College London to study Economics and Mathematics, Linda has been offered a place at Cambridge to read Economics; Cindy hopes to read Maths at Cambridge; and Maggie is continuing with her studies in Maths and Further Maths at A-Level.
Durham School has outstanding results in mathematics with 100% pass rate at both GCSE and A-level. For the last three years the schools Further Mathematics results have been 100% A*.
