The enforced nationwide lockdown and phased return to life as we know it has been a tricky transition for parents, pupils and teachers of Bow (our Preparatory School for Durham School catering for ages three to 11).
We were therefore delighted to receive welcome praise from our valued parents as we’ve ended another successful academic year - despite the challenges faced by all.
Sally Harrod, Headmistress of Bow happily announces that “since the lockdown has lifted, we have been able to welcome back 86% of pupils to Bow this term with our remaining shielding pupils continuing to benefit from our online teaching.”
But this successful journey has not been without challenge. Thankfully, utilising existing resources and the enthusiasm of staff has meant less disruption for pupils at this crucial time in their education.
“We’ve benefited from our senior school buildings allowing us to provide a spacious environment for returning pupils whilst maintaining the government safety guidelines.
“The dedication of our teaching staff has been incredible. They have gone over and above to ensure parents and pupils receive ongoing, flexible support throughout this difficult time.”
Mrs Harrod continues: “We have been very conscious of helping parents manage their time so have adapted our remote learning frequently to support our parent body. We all felt strongly that we wanted to mirror the kind of support our parents have shown us over the years.”
Parents echoed this experience and praised teachers’ valiant efforts.
Dr Jane Todd a parent of a Year 2 Bow, Durham School pupil shared her thoughts with us and said “We have been incredibly impressed by how Durham School have approached the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The quality of the remote learning is exemplary - I know this is no mean feat, and that it will be far more time-consuming and complex for teachers than being in the classroom!
“My child is so happy to be back; the staff approach is sensible and measured but does not lose sight of what makes Bow 'Bow'.”
We want to say a huge thank you to our wonderful teachers, enthusiastic pupils and continually supportive parents for all playing their part to ensure we have ended this academic year positively.
