At Durham School, we treat each child who requires Learning Support individually and tailor our teaching and support so they can reach their full potential.

The Learning Support Department screen all new pupils to the school and conducts further diagnostic testing if required.

Over the years we have taught pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, DCD, Asperger's Syndrome and PDD (NOS).

We also see pupils who may need a short catch-up programme in reading, spelling or organisation and we can offer study skills programmes at any stage of a pupil's career.

Each child’s Learning Support journey is different, but here are some things you can expect from our experienced team:

  • Dedicated, qualified teachers who assess, plan, and implement individual one-to-one lessons for pupils where needed.
  • A trusted and collaborative relationship with parents. Contact with parents is very important and pupils are always involved in decisions about their learning. We hold regular individual parents' meetings and provide detailed but easy-to-understand Pupil Passports.
  • Due regard paid to the SEN Code of Practice 2014 and the Equality Act. 
  • An integrated approach. Information regarding pupils' differences and how best to teach them is passed on to all class teachers and we offer clear and helpful advice to all members of staff.
  • Regular assessments for Access arrangements for external exams.
