Overseas Transport / Visas

Visas for those living outside the European Community

If you have accepted a place at Durham School and live outside the EC, it is very likely that you will need a travel visa before you are allowed to leave your own country to travel to the UK. The normal procedure for this as follows:

  1. Place is accepted at Durham School
  2. You request from us a letter from us for the authorities in your own country
  3. We provide an official letter from the School testifying to the fact that your son/daughter will be studying here full-time and giving the dates of his/her stay in this country
  4. On receipt of this letter, you can then apply for a visa.

Once your son/daughter arrives in this country, it is also likely that he/she will need to register with the local police. All this is taken care of during your son/daughter's first few days at the School by the House staff.

Transport to Durham School for Overseas Students

Durham School is easily accessible by road, rail and air. The train station (East Coast Main Line) is less than five minutes away by taxi; Newcastle and Durham Teesside airports are under an hour away by car and the A1M between Newcastle and the South runs close to Durham City.

However, it is normally possible for us to collect overseas students from the airport, provided we are given advance warning of the day and time of arrival.

A Message from Miss J Linthwaite (Head of the E2L Department)

If you join Durham School as an overseas student, someone can normally be available to meet you when you arrive and a variety of different people will always be on hand during your time in the School to help you in every way possible. If you arrive a few days before the beginning of term and are staying near Durham, whether accompanied by parents or by yourself, I would be interested to meet you. This preliminary contact can be very helpful. It would enable you, as a new pupil, to learn what to expect in the School, offer reassurance to your parents and allow you to experience your new surroundings before becoming involved with your studies.

Testimonials

"Durham School offers a host of opportunities for all interests. Our son enjoys everything he has encountered – but especially music, where the dedication and the ability of the staff is remarkable. We can’t keep him away!"
