Far East
Durham School has a long tradition of welcoming pupils from the Far East. Originally, the majority came from Hong Kong with some also from Korea, but more are now joining us from mainland China.
Guardians
Most of those who join us are of necessity full boarders and therefore need a guardian who lives in this country and who can look after the pupil during the week-long half-term holidays. Please note that, if you do not have a relative or friend in this country who can act as a guardian, we can put you in touch with a Guardian Agency but we are not allowed to recommend individual guardians.
English as a Second Language
It is important to establish before a child joins us from the Far East that his or her command of English is good enough to be able to cope with the challenge of attending a UK boarding school where all lessons are delivered in English. The vast majority of Far Eastern pupils need at least some help with English as a Second Language and many need a considerable degree of help, especially in the early stages. However, with expert help and the individual attention they receive, progress can be rapid and many of our Far Eastern pupils have achieved significant success both academically and outside the classroom.

Testimonials
"Having not been at such a big school before, I wasn’t at all sure what to expect but I needn’t have worried about anything because everyone in MacLeod was so friendly; all the girls look after one another making you feel extremely comfortable and at home. You soon settle in to the routine of lessons and especially the routine of tea and toast."
Harriet Ward (MacLeod, Year 11)
