Overseas Admissions

The vast majority of our overseas pupils join us through an agency who will help with the admissions procedures which may seem complicated, especially if there are any English language difficulties for the applicants.

Durham School awarded Top Rated Tier 4 Boarding Sponsor's Licence

Pupils outside of the European Economic Area who are looking to study in the United Kingdom must be sponsored by a learning establishment which holds a licence to sponsor the migrant under the UK Border Agency’s points based system. We are very proud to announce that Durham School holds an A rated Tier 4 sponsor’s licence.

To qualify as a general student (aged 19 at the time of application) or as a child student under tier 4, a migrant must score 40 points. Points for initial applications and extensions are awarded as follows:

  • Firstly the migrant must satisfy the government’s standard of English by taking an IELTS test either at the Home Office within their home country, or, by passing an English examination set by Durham School.
  • Having a conformation of acceptance for studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor containing an unconditional offer of a place on a course of study at an acceptable level. (30 points)
  • Having enough money to cover the course fees and monthly living costs for up to one year. (10 points)

Qualifications for admission

This will depend to some extent on the age of the applicant but it is often impracticable for applicants from overseas to sit our normal Entrance Examinations at 11+, 13+ and 16+. In such cases we do not insist on any specific qualifications, although we will wish to satisfy ourselves that the applicant will be able to cope with the proposed course of study. This can normally be achieved through a school reference or other direct communication between ourselves and the applicant's current school. Although we offer expert tuition in English as an Additional Language (EAL), some ability to communicate in English is needed if the applicant is to cope with the demands of full-time education in this country. This is particularly important for those applying for admission into the Sixth Form and we require that applicants for the Sixth Form achieve at least Level 5.5 in IELTS.

Deposits for overseas students

Please note that the deposit payable on acceptance of a place for a pupil from overseas is £450 for an applicant from a country within the European Economic Area and £450 plus one term's fees for applicants from outside the European Economic Area. This deposit is set against the pupil's final bill on leaving the School. Please refer also to section on Fees.

"Our son was delighted with the level of learning support he received. His teachers encouraged him not to use his dyslexia as an excuse for under-achieving but equally gave him extra time to complete his work when necessary. Whilst at Durham School our son enjoyed numerous extra-curricular activities - rugby, cricket, ski trip, camping at Kielder, school drama productions, walking Bonnie (the former Housemasters family's dog) and of course, supporting the 1st XV at Twickenham!
