Athletics Success Continues

Athletics Success Continues

(28 June 2010)

Durham School's Athletics Club has seen yet another year of success with athletes once again exceeding expectations and providing us with some impressive results both on the track and in the field.

The crowning success of the 2010 season must be the deserved victory of the U13 Boys' team at the Red House Invitation U13 Track & Field Championships. Special congratulations therefore to the team comprising: Rhys Morpeth, Matthew Routh, Chris Field, Nathan Dresser, Nick Mitchinson and Alex Campbell.

The season began with the prestigious North of England HMC Track & Field Championships at Gateshead International Athletics Stadium. Here our athletes competed against the very best athletes from all other Independent School’s in the region. Several of our athletes won their events: Josh Corcoran won the Senior Boys' 200m and High jump, Ruari Bell the Junior Boys' Pole Vault, Zoe Smith the Senior Girls' High Jump and Fiona Dewar the Junior Girls' Long Jump.

However, it was not just these individual performances which was pleasing - just as encouraging was the performance of all our athletes that resulted in our Senior Boys' and Junior Girls' teams finishing in 5th place overall and our Junior Boys in 7th place overall. Considering the level of competition on show, this was a fantastic result and our best to date.

This success continued with even more impressive individual and team performances at the Barnard Castle Junior and Senior Competitions and the Durham Central County Championships and number of our athletes gained County representative honours this year.

We have some very talented and promising athletes at Durham School and there are sure to be further future successes to follow.

Testimonials

"When you join the school, you get a buddy who is there to help you around the House and she is just like a big sister. I found that I soon made friends with all the other girls in MacLeod and many of the Pimlico girls. So settling in was not as scary and hard as I thought it would be - it was actually quite fun! "
Emily Phillips (MacLeod, Year 9)
