Water Polo at Durham School

The School started playing water polo matches in 1999. Fixtures are held against local schools and clubs at four age groups: U18, U16, U15 and U14. Up to the U16 age group teams can contain boys and girls, so some mixed games have been played. We enter the English Schools' competitions at U18 and U16 levels. In 2005 the U18s did very well in winning the northern division. This is a competition that runs below the national league, which contains the strong water polo schools.

Six inter-house competitions are held each term. MacLeod House holds the senior girls' trophy, Pimlico the junior girls' trophy and they share the intermediate girls' trophy. School House won the senior boys' competition, Caffinites the intermediate boys and Poole House the junior boys.

In recent years several ODs have represented their universities at water polo. Alex Cronin currently captains Glasgow University and Stephen Earl captains Stirling University.

Testimonials

"Durham School has the essential mix of everything one might need: friendly teachers, good facilities, fantastic sports opportunities and, most importantly perhaps, a strong sense of fraternity in the House system. It has been the experiences within the House that have helped me develop as a person; from taking a lead role in House drama, music or participating in the various sports competitions, I have felt supported, encouraged and met with friendship among the other boys as well as the House staff."
Fraser Jackson (School House, Year 13)
