Mathematics
The Mathematics Curriculum at Durham School
Year 7 & 8
Pupils currently follow the a course which allows them to develop their mathematical skills. The emphasis is very much on having fun whilst learning and ensuring the basics are understood. We develop thier skills further with lots of extension materials including investigations, activities and competitions.
Year 9 - 11
GCSE Syllabus: Edexcel, Mathematics (linear) and statistics
From September 2011 all Year 9 pupils will embark on a three year maths and statisics course. This allows pupils to develop both their mathematical skills as well looking at practical use of them in the statistics course. The assesments for these will be done at the end of year 10 and in year 11
The BBCBitesize website provides a useful resource for pupils prior to GCSE exams. In the Sixth Form students can choose to study Mathematics or Mathematics and Further Mathematics (using two option choices)
Mathematics is a required entry qualification for many mathematical, scientific and engineering courses, and is welcomed for other types of course, including Medicine. Mathematics is commonly taken with scientific subjects, but a mathematical qualification is highly valued in any combination. In both combinations the examining body is Edexcel.
A Level Mathematics
Required qualifications are an interest in the subject and a Grade B or better in GCSE. It is not possible to take the course if the full syllabus for the Higher Tier examination at GCSE (or equivalent) has not been studied. It is advisable to have studied the top tier of the GCSE syllabus and to have gained a Grade B or better. Students not continuing with Mathematics in the Upper Sixth will be able to obtain an 'AS' qualification in the Lower Sixth.

Testimonials
"Our son is delighted with the level of learning support he receives. His teachers have encouraged him not to use his dyslexia as an excuse for under-achieving but equally give him extra time to complete his work when necessary. Since joining the school, our son has enjoyed numerous extra-curricular activities - rugby, cricket, ski trip, camping at Kielder, school drama productions, walking Bonnie (the Housemaster’s family's dog) and of course, supporting the 1st XV at Twickenham!
