Further Mathematics
Students with a particular interest in and flair for Mathematics may opt for both Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Those who do follow an accelerated course in A-level Mathematics and sit the A2 examination at the end of Year 12. This allows them to concentrate on Further Mathematics in Year 13. It follows from this that those contemplating this course should already have shown exceptional ability in Mathematics.
Content of the courses:
Mathematics: The six modules cover Pure Mathematics (modules C1, C2), and Statistics (module S1) in the Lower Sixth, followed by Pure Mathematics (modules C3, C4) and Mechanics (module M1) in the Upper Sixth.
Further Mathematics: The six modules cover Pure Mathematics (modules FP1, FP2), and Statistics (module S2) in the Lower Sixth, followed by Pure Mathematics (module FP3) and Mechanics (modules M2 and M3) in the Upper Sixth.
News from the Mathematics Department
Last year saw a major development in the Mathematics curriculum with the introduction of unique Mathematics sets in all years 7 to 11. This enables the teachers to gear the programme of study to suit the narrower range of ability in each set more effectively.
From 2004 onwards our Preparatory School at Bow and The Chorister School followed the same scheme of work (The Bridging Curriculum) in the second half of the Summer Term as our own Year 8 sets. This helped the transition of new pupils coming into Durham School in September, when the majority of the new year 9 pupils had previous experience of the course.
In September 2006 the new two-tier GCSE was launched in Year 10, with a new Key Stage 4 scheme of work to match it. The new simpler means a simpler choice of tiers (from 3 to 2) with the Foundation Tier now including the possibility of Grade C. In addition to the two-tier system GCSE, coursework in GCSE Mathematics will be phased out in 2008. This is another welcome change to the curriculum, although we shall have to wait and see what assessment elements are introduced to replace coursework.
Another development in September 2006 saw Further Mathematics fully timetabled on our curriculum, with a strong group of six Year 12 pupils taking up the option.
