Inter House Competition

“Community” is one of our watchwords. Our Houses are small communities in themselves with their own distinctive character and atmosphere. House loyalty is very strong and the many annual House competitions are keenly contested in a spirit of intense, but friendly, rivalry. Each House has its own Head of House, House Monitors and House Council and the pupils themselves are closely involved in the day-to-day running of their House.

The main Inter-House Competitions are in Music, Drama and Sport as they allow the whole House to compete in some way, shape or form. On many occasions the desire to compete for the House will outweigh all other commitments on the part of the pupils, for example at the House Music Competition, which is performed bi-annually at The Sage Gateshead, where in 2009 four boys performed on crutches!!!

The competitions are a great way to create a sense of loyalty towards the House so that it is the House first and the School second. Senior pupils help to inspire the junior pupils, whether on the sports field or in a debating competition.

There is a whole variety of House competitions available, all of which can see a pupil earn the much prized House Colours. Rowing, Football, Hockey, General Knowledge, Swimming, Water Polo, Christmas card designing, Basketball, Cooking … the list goes on. It is this aspect of the House system that pupils remember with great fondness and many of our former pupils come back to continue to support ‘their’ House and to find out the latest Inter-House results!
