Hockey at Durham School

Girls

Hockey has always been the main sport for girls in the Christmas Term. With the opening in spring 2005 of our astro-turf which is situated overlooking Durham Cathedral the standard of hockey has improved drastically.

Girls play hockey 2 or 3 times a week with regular matches at all age groups. Girls of all standards are given the opportunity to train and play on a regular basis. Inter-house matches happen at the end of the Christmas term.

11 girls represented the county last year and 32 girls are members of the Durham Hockey Academy. Through our 1st team coach Lyn Dobison there are close links to the academy and Sunderland Ladies Hockey Club. We run an U13 Junior School tournament in the Easter Term which is thoroughly enjoyed by local private schools.

The 1st XI and U16 XI have regularly won the county tournaments and the 1st XI has 3 times progressed to the North Finals of the National Cup.

Boys

This has only been played at the school since 2005 but is quickly becoming one of the boys’ main team sports in the Easter term. We run U15 and U18 hockey teams and are lucky to have some very good coaching staff to look after both teams. Both teams are developing well and are able to make very good use of our excellent astro-turf facility on which they train three times a week. We play regular competitive fixtures every Saturday throughout the Easter term and are also very proud to hold our own annual U18 seven a-side boys’ hockey tournament every season.

Testimonials

"Since James has been at Durham School, we have noticed a dramatic change in his willingness to learn and listen. He has matured beyond our expectations. This transformation occurred within the first year at Durham School."
