Pre-Prep Dept (5 - 7)
The Pre-Prep Department at Bow, Durham School incorporates all children in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. Teaching staff in the Pre-Prep work closely alongside one another to provide these children with a safe, caring and family orientated environment where they feel comfortable, happy and secure, building their self-confidence and independence.
The Key Stage One classrooms are housed directly next door to the Early Years. All staff and pupil’s are in regular contact through shared assemblies, playtimes, lunchtimes, after school care and more besides; particularly once children are in Reception Class. This helps to prepare children for a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage.
Teachers in Key Stage One build on prior knowledge (gained from the close working links with both Early Years professionals and parents) of individual children’s abilities to provide a rich and varied curriculum tailored specifically around our children.
Children are encouraged to expand their social and academic awareness in a fun and stimulating environment. The curriculum embraces the core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Science with great emphasis placed upon developing early reading, writing and mathematical skills. Other subjects include History, Geography, ICT, RE, Art, French, Music and PE.
Children in Key Stage One have the opportunity to explore their musical talents by taking advantage of individual music tuition in piano or guitar, or by joining our fiddle club in Year 2.
All children from Reception Class take part in weekly swimming lessons and by the end of Year 2, children will take part in our Prep School Swimming Gala.
Learning continues after school when children have the choice to join numerous clubs and activities; modern dance classes, karate, tennis and speech and drama are all on offer.
Advait joined Bow (Reception) at the age of four. As he had not attended the Badger Nursery, we were initially anxious about how he would cope with the transition to his new school. As a result of high quality support, guidance and care provided by the staff at Bow, we have seen a significant improvement in Advait's overall development."
