Sports, Activities, Trips & Excursions

Pupils in the Prep Department enjoy two hour-long games sessions per week at age 7 and 8, rising to three sessions by the time they are 9. The main sports are currently rugby, soccer, cricket, cross-country, athletics, mixed hockey, netball and rounders. Pupils swim on a regular basis throughout the year, using the indoor pool at the Senior School. Bow pupils also make use of the Astroturf pitches at the Senior School.

The activities programme also allows pupils to take part in karate, gymnastics, table tennis, winter cricket nets and speech and drama with the ever-expanding range allowing for other areas to be covered in the future. The list of activities is always published in the calendar allowing pupils to choose.

All of our girls and boys benefit from a wealth of trips and visits to support the curriculum. Pupils have recently visited Durham Castle and Cathedral, Bede's World, Beamish Museum, Binchester Roman Fort, Arbeia Roman Fort, Monkwearmouth Railway Museum, Rheged in Cumbria, the Life Museum in Newcastle and the facilities at the University of Durham. There are frequent theatre trips to the Gala in Durham, Empire in Sunderland or Theatre Royal in Newcastle. We also organise sporting and cultural trips abroad, for example to Venice and Rome and our Easter ski trip to Northern Italy has become a very popular bi-annual event.

"Jon-Ross has attended Durham School since he was 11 years old. He really enjoys the school, both on the academic side and all the activities. He has gained confidence and a respect for himself and others. His academic achievement has improved in all areas, which has given him the confidence to reach for the sky. I can only say that Jon-Ross loves Durham school and enjoys it completely and when you enjoy something learning comes easy. Jon Ross Kemp (Year 10) "
