Beavers to Reception

Starting school is a major transition for children and families. It is a period of change that can be daunting, but also challenging and exciting. Within the nursery we ensure that all the children are well prepared for school life and have a smooth and happy move to Reception.

We plan this transition process well in advance and take account of the child's individual needs ;supporting them to adjust to their new roles, new expectations and new staff. The 'Beaver Room' which is situated upstairs in the Early Years Department allows children to make the first steps to life in Reception. The children spend a short time each day in the 'Beaver Room' during the summer term prior to starting school. During these short sessions children take part in planned activities, meet their Reception teacher and other members of the school staff and take part in school assemblies. Nursery staff support and extend children's learning and time is given so that they can develop skills and abilities within a small group.

Parents are invited to an induction talk prior to your child starting Reception. Information is shared and parents can enjoy refreshments, talk to the Reception teacher and meet other parents.

"Jon-Ross has attended Durham School since he was 11 years old. He really enjoys the school, both on the academic side and all the activities. He has gained confidence and a respect for himself and others. His academic achievement has improved in all areas, which has given him the confidence to reach for the sky. I can only say that Jon-Ross loves Durham school and enjoys it completely and when you enjoy something learning comes easy. Jon Ross Kemp (Year 10) "
