Taffy Thomas MBE is a professional storyteller and patron of the Society for Storytelling and the girls and boys at Bow Durham School were thrilled that he was able to join them as part of National Reading Week on Monday 3 March to tell them some tales! http://www.taffythomas.co.uk/frame1.html
With Taffy's head bursting with stories, riddles and folklore, the children were in for a treat and they were able to put their excellent listening skills to the test. Year 2 pupil, Jared Pringle, was presented with a special award for his good listening skills! Taffy ran workshops for Years 1 & 2 in the morning (who dressed up as their favourite character from a book) and for Years 3, 4 & 5 in the afternoon.
Taffy has a repertoire of more than 300 stories and he is now the most experienced English storyteller, having performed in many countries on four continents. He is currently Artistic Director of Tales in Trust, the Northern Centre for Storytelling, based at The Storytellers Garden in Grasmere. In the 2001 New Year Honours List he was awarded the MBE for services to storytelling and charity and performed a new collaboration for the Blue Peter Prom at the Royal Albert Hall. In October 2009 Taffy accepted the honorary position of first Laureate for Storytelling which ran for two years from January 2010 to January 2012.
The children in the Prep Department will also be putting their design and persuasive language skills to the test in preparation for World Book Day on Thursday 6 March by designing a poster or a book cover design to promote their favourite book. The competition will be judged on the day by the Head of English at Durham School, Mrs Freya Swan and the Head of Art & Design at Durham School, Mr Mark Baldwin. All entries will be completed during the pupils IT, Art and English lessons and must include the pupil’s personal opinion to persuade other pupils in their class that this is the best book to buy or read – ever!
Year 6 and 7 pupils will be enjoying a trip together to the Theatre Royal Newcastle for the Authors & Illustrators Mega Event, organised by Seven Stories.
