About Durham City

With a history stretching back a thousand years, Durham City is dominated by its magnificent cathedral and castle. Now a World Heritage Site, the panoramic view of the cathedral and castle has been described as “one of the finest architectural experiences of Europe”. Durham School has strong links with the Cathedral and our annual Carol service is held there in December, as well as one whole school service per term. Durham’s university was founded in the nineteenth century and is regarded as one of the finest in the country.

Durham is easy to reach by road, rail or air. Durham railway station is on the East Coast Main Line. Average journey times are as follows: London King's Cross (less than 3 hours); Edinburgh (less than 2 hours); York (45 minutes); Northallerton (30 minutes); Darlington (15 minutes); Newcastle (15 minutes).

The A1M runs within a couple of miles of the city centre and Newcastle and Durham Tees Valley airports are both within an hour's drive of the city.

Theatre-goers have a wide choice; Durham has its own modern Gala Theatre and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, the Sunderland Empire Theatre and the Civic Theatre in Darlington are also close by. Music lovers will not be able to resist the attraction of The Sage Gateshead, now one of the finest concert venues in Europe, where our very own House Music Competition will take place in March 2009.

Durham has its own wide variety of shops and supermarkets (in and out of town). Newcastle, Darlington and the Metro Centre are all just half an hour away by car.

Sports lovers can choose from a variety of fine sports venues in the area: Riverside is the home of Durham County Cricket Club (now a Test Match venue); St James' Park, The Stadium of Light and  the Riverside Stadium are the home football grounds of Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough respectively; and Newcastle Falcons play at Kingston Park.

Testimonials

"I joined Durham School, having no idea what to expect. It has been a great experience and I wouldn't change amnything about my time here. Durham School has changed me into a mature young man and has prepared me for later life. "
David Taylor

"When you join the school, you get a buddy who is there to help you around the House and she is just like a big sister. I found that I soon made friends with all the other girls in MacLeod and many of the Pimlico girls. So settling in was not as scary and hard as I thought it would be - it was actually quite fun! "
Emily Phillips (MacLeod, Year 9)
