How to find us

Durham is conveniently situated within easy reach of local airports at Newcastle and Durham Teesside, Durham Station (East Coast main line), the A1M motorway linking Newcastle and the North with Darlington, York and the South and the A19. Durham School is situated close to the city centre with Bow, Durham School just half a mile down the road.

From the A1M (travelling north)

Leave the A1M motorway at junction 61 (Durham Services). Take the second exit at the roundabout, sign-posted Bowburn. Drive through Bowburn and keep straight on. At the next roundabout (after the sports ground) take the first exit, keep straight on over the traffic-lights and also at the next roundabout. Drive past the archway on your left-hand side and turn left at the corner immediately afterwards. The entrance to Durham School is now immediately on your left. Please note that a one-way system operates in the School quad - vehicles should not enter through the archway.

From the A1M (travelling south)

Leave the A1M motorway at Junction 62 (SP Durham/Sunderland). At the roundabout take the 3rd exit (SP Durham) and follow the Dual Carriageway to the next roundabout where you take the 2nd exit and head down the hill towards the City Centre. At the roundabout at the bottom of the hill follow the A690 across the next two roundabouts, passing the viaduct on your right-hand side at the 2nd. At the traffic lights leave the A690 and go straight on into Margery Lane (do not follow the road round to the right). After passing some allotments on the left (with the cathedral behind), follow the road as it bends left and the entrance to Durham School is then on your right just before the right-angled bend.

From the A19

EITHER - Leave the A19 at Castle Eden and follow the A181 towards Durham. Stay on the A181 (through Wheatley Hill and Thornley), but ignore the sign to Durham and Sherburn (on your right) when you come to it. At the T-junction (The Rose Tree public house) turn right. Take the first exit at the next roundabout, go straight on at the traffic lights and also at the next roundabout. Drive past the archway on your left-hand side and turn left at the corner immediately afterwards. The entrance to Durham School is now immediately on your left. Please note that a one-way system operates in the School ojJad - vehicles should not enter through the archway.

OR - Take the A689 from the AI9 at Billingham (signpost Durham). When you reach the A1M follow directions as for from the A1M northbound.
