Charitable Status

Please also see downloadable letter from Headmaster Mr Martin George at the foot of this page.

Durham School is a registered Charity and, as such, endeavours to maintain its responsibility in remaining true to its charitable status and aims.

The School continues to commit dedicated funding towards means-tested bursaries to allow us to widen the opportunities and benefits of attending Durham School to a larger community of children.

In 2009 an amount equivalent to over 8% of turnover was dedicated to assist with the funding of means-tested bursaries alone; additional amounts were retained for the distribution of Awards and Scholarships totalling 23% of turnover.

Since the Government-funded Assisted Places Scheme ceased more than a decade ago, we have largely supported this bursary fund from the School’s own resources.

We would like to be able to seek out more children from disadvantaged backgrounds who would meet our academic entrance criteria but who, in the normal course of events, would not consider the opportunity of a Durham School education as a realistic possibility for them. To enable us to do this, we would rely on additional funding from charitable donations to the School exclusively for this cause.

Donations
Donations, however large or small, are always gratefully received and a way which you may prefer to donate is by a pecuniary or residuary bequest in your Will. It may be that you would like to bequeath something other than money - property, a painting, a piece of furniture, a share holding, an item of jewellery. All bequests in this way to Durham School as a Charity would be exempt of Inheritance Tax.

All donors are recognised as Benefactors of Durham School and will be published as such unless anonymity is requested. Major donors of £20,000 or more will be offered the opportunity of having their name featured within the bursary title.

Whether you are an Old Dunelmian, a parent or someone who just has a warm appreciation for the School and its ethos, there are small ways in which you can make a huge difference to a child’s potential, to give them the inspiration and confidence to be everything they can be.

A downloadable Direct Debit form is available a the foot of this page for anyone wishing to pay a small monthly amount towards the bursary fund. Gift Aided donations are always particularly welcome.
