History and Geography come alive for Form 3 pupils

History and Geography come alive for Form 3 pupils

(28 June 2010)

On Monday 28 June, as part of their Geography studies about early settlements, the children in Form 3 visited the Ryedale Folk Museum on the North York Moors.

The morning was spent in the reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse, dark and cool despite the heat of the June sunshine outside. The children, dressed in woollen tunics and hats, were given several chores to do inside the house by our guide, who was dressed as an Iron Age lady.

Their chores included sweeping the earthen floor, weaving, combing sheep's wool and grinding corn to make flour. They also sampled some freshly-made Iron Age pancakes flavoured with mint, lemon balm and honey. The morning was rounded off with a story telling session around the fire.

After the usual delicious packed lunches, eaten outside in the sunshine, Form 3 were then able to spend an hour or so exploring the rest of the museum, learning about how people lived at different times in the past. It was a wonderful way to bring some Geography and History to life - so much more meaningful than just sitting in a classroom!"

Testimonials

"When you join the school, you get a buddy who is there to help you around the House and she is just like a big sister. I found that I soon made friends with all the other girls in MacLeod and many of the Pimlico girls. So settling in was not as scary and hard as I thought it would be - it was actually quite fun! "
Emily Phillips (MacLeod, Year 9)
