Girls at Bow

In 2005 the Governors of Durham School took the decision that Bow should become co-educational and offer places to girls from September 2006. There have been a significant number of Sixth-form girls in the senior school since 1985 and there are now well over 100 girls between Years 7 and 13. A new extension is currently being built to accommodate the rapid rise in the number of girls. The decision to welcome girls at Bow was a logical step in the development of Durham School 3-18.

We welcome applications from girls for admission into any year group.

To celebrate the arrival of girls at Bow there has been an extensive programme of refurbishment and renovation so that the whole school can now boast first class facilities for all its girls and boys.

Adjustments have been made to the curriculum and the entire range of extra-curricular activities on offer is accessible to the girls.

Many of the teaching staff at Bow are female and the girls will be under the direct care of the Headmaster and his wife who have plenty of experience in looking after girls since, prior to coming to Durham, they were in charge of a co-educational school in Cornwall and before that ran a girls’ boarding house at a Prep school in Norfolk. The Headmaster’s wife will in fact take on the role of overseeing the pastoral care of all the girls within the School, while the day-to-day issues will remain the province if the form teacher.

The arrival of the first girls at Bow coincided with the decision to invest extensively in upgraded facilities for all pupils on the Bow site. Sepember 2006 saw the provision of a new state-of-the-art faciltiy for the Badger Nursery in Quarryheads House, new larger classrooms for the Pre-prep Department and a significant improvement to the facilities in the main building housing the Prep Department.

"Thank you for helping to transform our son from a shy and quite Badger into a confident "I'm ready for school" boy. The dedication, patience and support you gave to our son exceeded by far our expectations of you. You did an outstanding job and we will be forever grateful for the wonderful year he spent in the Badger Nursery. "
