Sport at Bow

We see sport as a vital ingredient contributing to the overall health and well-being of all our pupils and it is therefore, strictly speaking, part of our curriculum - as opposed to an extra-curricular activity. Partly as a consequence of this policy, Bow has a well-established and impressive sporting reputation. A significant number of former Bow pupils have gone on to represent their country in their chosen sport. Up to now these have, for obvious reasons, been all boys. However, we now look forward confidently to a time when Bow will provide future female sporting stars.

All pupils are expected to take part in sport of some kind and most days will contain some time devoted to physical activity.

A wide variety of sports is on offer to our boys and girls including hockey, netball, tennis, rugby, cricket, cross-country running, squash, badminton, gymnastics, judo, football, fencing and athletics. Our pupils are also taught to swim, with lessons on a regular basis in the indoor swimming pool at the Senior School, at Durham City baths or Spennymoor Leisure Centre.

The coaching is of a very high standard and most pupils will have represented the School at some stage during their time at Bow.

Competition is encouraged, with matches against other schools and clubs. There are also regular tours abroad, including an annual skiing trip to Italy during the Easter holiday which is hugely popular.

Testimonials

"We were so impressed with the quality of teaching in the Pre-prep department. Our son absolutely loved it and all his teachers were so caring and committed. We always felt able to talk to his teachers at any time. Our son has now joined the Preparatory Department and we are thrilled at the opportunities that now lie ahead for him."
